The first week: TROPES

The first week of saffember (1st - 7th) consists of commonly used tropes you can either portray it in the "traditional" way or subvert it as long as they tell the story of two or more people who identify as sapphic lovers.

TROPES

Some popular tropes are sports / jocks, road trips / camping, royalty , wedding / proposal, war, zombie apocalypse, nude model, reincarnation, soulmates, single parent, arranged marriage, best friend's sibling/sibling's best friend, coffee shop and wrong number.

Here you can find a list of all tropes used in fiction so you can choose the one you want to base your art on.

TROPE SUBVERSION

Trope subversion happens when a common trope is deliberately writen in a manner that diverts from its typical meaning.

Phrased another way, the work is ultimately revealed not to be using the trope at all, but in the meantime was played up to look like it was.

A subversion has two mandatory segments. First, the expectation is set up that something we have seen plenty of times before is coming, then that set-up is paid off with something else entirely. The set-up is a trope; the "something else" is the subversion. (source)

A great example for this is the webtoon Heaven & Hell Roman Company. This is the summary: With rapid developments to the human civilization, the need for God and his angels have decreased at a significant rate. Thus, the angels are experiencing a historic unemployment crisis! With this problem in hand, God decides to start a company that will reduce the unemployment rate in both Heaven and Hell. He hereby founds the company, H&H Roman Company!.

This work subverts the angels/demons trope! Although the angels and demons are present, they are written in a different, unexpected light!

Keep in mind that subversions are fun but that doesn't mean tropes are bad and neither that all subversions are good or clever.
